Joseph Green, Director
“An average director directs. A good director leads and follows at the same time.”
― Kensington Gore
My Process
I always begin my process by reading the script at least three times. Once for the audience’s viewpoint, again for my early artistic take on the play, and again, at least, one more time to revisit some of the ideas I may have once had on the work.
From this I develop background research on the piece, including time, place, action, and theme. This will help settle ideas and leave me prepared to answer any questions an actor or designer may ask during the course of the production. I develop this into a document for my reference as rehearsals continue.
Then I conjure a very specific statement about the play to condense my interpretation of the piece into a visual to share with designers to initially fuel their work. I find this helps early in the process to foster a culture of imagination and creativity that can be focused as the designs are honed. My aim is to build the skeleton of the work for the team and I to then flesh out.
Then, after casting, read throughs, and the first few production meetings I begin to plot specific stage pictures and blocking that will spark the team to collaborate to one cohesive final production built from the cornerstone of preparation.
Of course, each production is its own entity and requires a level of flexibility that will allow for free exchange of ideas and revisions if needed.
